Abstract

Functional equestrian sportswear is examined as an integrated design system encompassing ergonomic, biomechanical, physiological, and operational factors. The aim of the study is to establish a scientifically grounded framework linking equestrian disciplines, dynamic body geometry, rider–saddle interaction, material performance, and garment construction. Systems analysis, functional decomposition analysis, comparative analysis, and cause-and-effect mapping were applied to published research and the authors’ analytical studies. Show jumping, dressage, eventing, endurance riding, and traditional equestrian sports were compared in terms of movement patterns, duration of physical load, contact intensity, and environmental exposure. The waist–back, thigh, knee, and inner-thigh/seat regions were identified as critical functional zones requiring differentiated constructional and material solutions. The key measurable indicators include stretch and elastic recovery, abrasion resistance, air permeability, thermal resistance, water-vapour resistance, seam strength, and dimensional stability after care. The scientific novelty lies in integrating the athlete–garment–horse–environment system with functional zoning and multi-criteria material selection within a unified design framework. The proposed framework provides a methodological basis for laboratory testing, fit assessment in CLO 3D, prototype development, and subsequent wear-trial validation.
