Abstract

The Aral Sea disaster represents one of the most severe anthropogenic ecological catastrophes of the 20th
century. The Uzbek portion of the Southern Aral Sea has largely desiccated into the Aralkum Desert, where the Muynak
ship cemetery has emerged as a notable site for disaster-driven tourism. Driven by Uzbekistan’s Silk Road tourism
strategy, heritage-based tourism across the former seabed is expanding rapidly. Although this industry generates local
employment and fiscal benefits for the Republic of Karakalpakstan, tourism activities may disturb fragile salt- and pesticide-
contaminated dried seabed soils and create additional ecological pressures. Adopting a literature-review approach,
this paper examines current tourism development in the Aral Sea zone, evaluates its socioeconomic benefits alongside
environment-related pressures caused by visitors, and analyses the key balance between local economic growth and
ecological conservation. Drawing on restoration lessons from the Northern Aral Sea and Uzbekistan’s national policy
aimed at developing the Aral Sea region as an ecological innovation hub, this study proposes feasible sustainable-tourism
solutions that reconcile economic returns with environmental protection. The findings indicate that Aral Sea tourism produces
meaningful social outcomes, while the region’s ecological carrying capacity requires careful consideration. Further
expansion of tourist arrivals should therefore be accompanied by effective environmental management measures aimed
at reducing salt-dust emissions and soil degradation. Consequently, tourist carrying-capacity regulation, community-participatory
governance, and integrated frameworks combining ecological restoration with tourism operations are important
prerequisites for long-term sustainable development.
