Abstract

Restricted lexicon refers to words and expressions that are limited in use due to social, cultural, stylistic, or
ethical considerations. In French literature, such vocabulary includes slang, argot, taboo words, vulgarisms, dialectal
expressions, and sociolects that reflect the identity of particular social groups. The use of restricted lexicon in literary
texts serves various artistic functions, including character development, realism, social criticism, and the representation of
cultural diversity. This article examines the role, functions, and stylistic significance of restricted lexicon in French literary
works, highlighting how authors employ these linguistic elements to enrich narrative discourse and convey complex social
realities.
